There are many who dislike astrology, or for whom it appears to be utter nonsense. They describe it as a kind of relic from the irrational past, a pseudo-science or, at worst, a primitive, irrational kind of pass-time for people of low intelligence. Given the extent of bad astrology at large in the world today - everything from puerile newspaper horoscopes through to anonymous readings online all available at the click of the mouse - it is no wonder that this unfortunate state of affairs has arisen. These are not examples of real astrology, of course - but simply examples of journalism, or opportunistic small-time business ventures run by cynical and manipulative individuals for their own ends. Surprise surprise! Astrology is not immune to the modern world and to the process of exploitation. It is worth while, therefore, to take a more in-depth look at the subject of astrology. It is important to set out the distinction, the considerable differences between real astrology and that which is found in popular media and magazine columns. Modern, professional astrology is in fact an exacting and challenging occupation undertaken usually by people of integrity and honesty. It is more time consuming, more thoughtful and demanding than journalistic astrology, and draws upon vastly greater amounts of data to reach its conclusions than those found in mere sun-sign columns in magazines. It uses, for instance, the time and location of a person's birth in order to produce what is called a 'birth chart' - a detailed map of the sky, including sun moon, geographical co-ordinates and planetary positions for that precise moment. The birth chart, along with the rich symbolic landscape that it contains, is then used in a professional setting as a point of departure for discussion on matters as diverse as character, financial prospects or partnerships. It can also be used as a tool for speculating on the true nature of a person's past experiences, and on future ones. It can be viewed as a kind of blueprint or a 'seed' in other words that can unfold and evolve towards certain ends: forecasting. Forecasting is a speciality that some modern astrologers do not bother with at all. They believe, instead that character itself is destiny, and that this will be discernible in the chart anyway. Proper astrology does not believe in pre-destination or 'fate.' The business of the 'future' as seen by an experienced astrologer does not deal in certainties - things that must inevitably happen - but will, instead, consist of a range of possibilities, things that might or might not develop according to the demands of the real world and the influences of family, upbringing and environment. Clairvoyance is not used or even considered at any stage. The following table shows the differences between the low-grade dross and the 'real deal' of true astrology.
This short article will do little, I suspect, to alter the minds of the hardened sceptic, of which there are quiet a few, but might go some way towards clarifying an issue over which many a spoiled breakfast has occurred or over which many otherwise quite sober, decent people have shown themselves to be in want of a little temperance and understanding. |
